Services

If you are considering self-publishing a book, or would like to create an electronic document for any reason, consider using Portage's services.

Production

Portage provides end-to-end production of electronic books. In addition, we can supervise the production of traditional books from electronic masters. These services are billed on a time-and-materials basis, and include the following tasks:

• Scanning ($32/hour)
• Optical Character Recognition and text cleanup ($32/hour)
• Editing ($25/hour)
• Typesetting and Page Layout ($32/hour)
• Creation of PDF files or files in other electronic formats ($32/hour)
• Custom programming (in the rare cases where needed) ($75-$250/hour)
• Supervision of printing and binding (if needed) ($25/hour)

Portage maintains a set of best-of-breed development tools for the above tasks, including Adobe® FrameMaker®+SGML, Adobe® Illustrator®, Adobe® Photoshop®, Adobe® InDesign®, Adobe® Acrobat®, and a wide variety of high quality typefaces. We also maintain a wide variety of software development tools for specialized technical tasks.

Marketing

After your book or other document has been produced, Portage can provide some limited services to assist you in your marketing efforts. Although we are not a marketing powerhouse, we can assist you in developing a web site that is appropriate for marketing and/or delivering your product to your customers. Web site development is generally $40/hour. Integration to back-office applications and e-commerce applications is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but generally corresponds to the same rates as custom programming (see "Production" above).

Portage reserves the right to refuse to assist in the production of books or other documents that its management deems inappropriate for any reason.
